Atlanta—Travelers can now avoid high gasoline prices, costly cab rides and delays due to traffic congestion in Atlanta. This southern city has expanded several of its mass transit services so meeting attendees and tourists alike can negotiate the city cheaply, conveniently and quickly. The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority, Atlantas main public transportation system, recently established the Atlanta Tourist Loop (ATL), linking major hotels with some of the city's top attractions including the Georgia Aquarium,(www.georgiaaquarium.org), the Martin Luther King, Jr. historic district, CNN Center and Underground Atlanta. Toohey's Trolleys also recently introduced a shuttle service, ferrying riders in a 2.3-mile loop between the Georgia Aquarium and Underground Atlanta.
"These new transportation options open up our city to convention attendees by connecting their hotels and meeting places with the best of Atlanta," said Mark Vaughan, executive vice president, sales and marketing, Atlanta Convention & Visitors Bureau. "Between meetings, they can take advantage of any one of these options to easily explore our neighborhoods and attractions and see everything our city has to offer."
Looking ahead, in 2009, the new Atlanta Streetcar wil provide a north/south link along Atlantas famous Peachtree Street, creating a viable way for visitors to travel to various attractions, including Buckhead shopping and dining and the Atlanta History Center. A total of 44 stops are planned for the proposed 12-mile line, with a downtown loop stopping at Centennial Olympic Park, the Georgia World Congress Center and Philips Arena. The streetcar is projected to serve more than 21,500 riders daily and generate $4.4 billion in economic development
