The largest global organization made up of managers of event facility officially replaced Assembly with Venue. Reflecting both new projects and the obvious change in industry idiom, the International Association of Assembly Managers has changed its name to the International Association of Venue Managers (IAVM). The IAVM Web address is now www.IAVM.org.
“Our new name clearly characterizes our industry and aligns the organization with what our members do – manage and operate thousands of venues in communities, metroplexes, cities, counties, territories, countries and more worldwide,” said John Siehl, CFE, IAVM Chairman of the Board, IAVM.
According to Dexter King, CFE, President/CEO of the IAVM, even though the initials will be altered, the mission of the organizations remains the same. “Changing ‘assembly’ to ‘venue’ does not change who or what we are. We will preserve all that our brand represents and yet reflect all we can become in the future,” said King
He added, “Through its many program offerings, IAVM will continue to assist its members’ with commerce, advocacy, research and education.”
With Venue now part of its official handle, the organization will use the term to strengthen its well known brand. It’s annual convention was renamed VenueConnect in 2010, their very own social networking platform is called Venuenet, and a soon to be announced research project carries the title of VenueSource.
“We will likely witness other changes as we continue to evaluate our brand portfolio to ensure that it is nimbly meeting the needs of our members and the industry it serves,” Siehl added.
This is not the first time in its 85 year history that the organization has broken out the thesaurus and revised its official moniker. At its inception in 1924, the organization was called the Association of Auditorium Managers. In 1934 the association’s added International to become the International Association of Auditorium Managers, which lasted until 1996, when Auditorium was replaced with Assembly.
While words may change, the organization, which has 3,5000+ members, is still the world's largest professional association dedicated to issues relevant to the management of public assembly venues. Members of the association manage public assembly venues such as amphitheaters, arenas, auditoriums, convention centers/exhibit halls, performing arts venues, stadiums and university complexes; or provide products, services or attractions to support the industry.
