VenuWorks has added another, Midwest arena/convention, multi-purpose complex to its portfolio. In mid-August, The Bemidji City Council of Bemidji, Minnesota, named the venue management company to handle operations of the Bemidji Regional Event Center—now known as the BREC, which is scheduled to open in Fall 2010.
The bidding process for the management contract, was considered quite competitive and VenuWorks competed with other major companies. After the proposal submission concluded, a second interview process took place, which focused on potential general manager candidates.
Some council members the selection of VenuWorks was finally based on a nearly intangible bit of criteria—comfort level. “There was a more Bemidji-like feel to VenuWorks,” said Roger Hellquist, City Councilor.
Follow-up contract negotiations with VenuWorks are expected to take about a month. When concluded, the company will conduct a nationwide search for a general manager.
The BREC is under construction. Ground was broken in Having broken ground in April and currently under-construction, The BREC will feature a convention center and arena. The arena, with approximately 4,000 seats, will host Bemidji State’s NCAA Division I men’s and women’s hockey teams.
