New OrleansThe Louisiana Superdome will re-open November 1, 2006 after repairs are completed from damage sustained as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Repair costs are estimated to be $140 million, most of which will be covered by the states insurance and by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The Superdome has become the most recognizable symbol of New Orleans, says Tim Coulon, chairman of the Louisiana Stadium and Exposition Board. The rebuilding of the Superdome will represent the rebuilding of the city.
The late Fall 06 opening enables the New Orleans Saints and Tulane University to play November and December home games in the Superdome. The venue has also been the annual stage for an array of entertainment, consumer and business events, including the Essence Music Festival, New Orleans Auto Show, Greater New Orleans Boat Show, and Louisiana Sportsman show, all of which are expected to be held at the Superdome in 07, according to facility officials.
The Superdome, one of the largest domed structures in the world, has hosted six Super Bowls, more than any other stadium, and features four 19,000-sq.ft. ballrooms, 53 separable meeting rooms, three dining rooms and a 5,000-car garage. Last year, following Hurricane Katrina, the facility served as shelter of last resort for upwards of 15,000 New Orleans residents. The venue sustained severe roof damage, and all its carpeting, sheeting and tile will be replaced as part of its rebuilding. The Superdome is currently accepting bookings for meetings and events.
