
Gymnastics fans from all over the country gathered at Wells Fargo Arena Tuesday night to welcome Iowa’s Golden Girl, Shawn Johnson, back to Des Moines, Iowa. Over 7,000 members of the public and media provided a rousing reception for the Olympic champion. The event was emceed by WHO-TV Sports Director, Keith Murphy and featured Johnson’s parents, Teri and Doug Johnson and her coaches, Liang and Li Zhuang Chow. Johnson, 16, won one gold and three silver medals at the Olympics. “Without a doubt, Wells Fargo Arena was the perfect place for Shawn’s homecoming,” said Greg Edwards, President/CEO, Greater Des Moines Convention and Visitors Bureau. “For Wells Fargo Arena to put together an event of this magnitude in just a few days is a true demonstration of what a quality and dependable venue it really is.” (photography by Jannae Lane, Greater Des Moines Convention and Visitors Bureau)
