The Cedar Rapids Ice Arena, one of three facilities in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, managed by VenuWorks, will host the 2010 National Horseshoe Pitchers Association World Tournament. According to MaryLee Malmberg, Director of Sports Tourism for the Cedar Rapids Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, the city has been vying 20 years for the tournament—which was last held in the Hawkeye State in 1978—and it was the unique offerings available at the venue that sealed the deal. “The world tournament requires an indoor, air-conditioned facility that can accommodate 50 horseshoe courts,” said Malmberg. “The Cedar Rapids Ice Arena met all the criteria for the event.” The event will run from July 26-Aug. 7 and is expected to attract nearly 1,300 participants “We are excited about hosting this national event,” said Scott Schoenike, VenuWorks Executive Director for the U.S. Cellular Center, Paramount Theatre and Cedar Rapids Ice Arena. “To utilize the venue in a non-traditional format is a great way to generate revenue in the summer months.”
