VisitPittsburgh – the official CVB & Tourism agency for Allegheny County – is one of the first CVBs to incorporated social media technology into its marketing mix. VisitPittsburgh’s newest initiative, “Pittsburgh Txts,” lets visitors, meeting planners & attendees and residents register to receive text message updates on their cell phones about exciting events happening in Pittsburgh and Its Countryside. For the new effort, VisitPittsburgh teamed up with MoGoes, a Pittsburgh-based mobile technology company that aims to make information more accessible to travelers by simply using their cell phones. This is the second partnership between Pittsburgh and MoGoes; the two organizations partnered in 2006 to create downloadable video walking tours of Pittsburgh for travelers. “Text messaging is a rapidly expanding form of communication and a great way for us to reach out to visitors. It’s an application that is instantaneous and a great way to help our visitors plan their Pittsburgh experience,” said Joe McGrath, President and CEO of VisitPittsburgh. To sign up for the texts, cell phone users can simply text “PghEvents” to 86631. Once registration has been confirmed, VisitPittsburgh will send weekly updates about big events that are going on in and around Pittsburgh. (Users can unsubscribe to the service at any time by simply texting “STOP” to the same number.) The text messages will be sent every Thursday, and will include information about upcoming events. “VisitPittsburgh continues to work hard to be on the forefront of technology and this is just another step toward that goal,” said McGrath.
