DTE Energy Music Theater, the outdoor amphitheater in Clarkston, Michigan, owned an operated by Palace Sports & Entertainment (PSE), committed to environmentally sustainable practices by taking a lead from its name sake, DTE Energy. The venue implemented several “green” initiatives by has seen tangible results of these efforts by reaching two milestones for their participation in DTE Energy’s GreenCurrents program and for the venue’s recycling efforts. GreenCurrents is a voluntary renewable energy program offered by DTE Energy and is available to its residence and business electric customers. Through the program, the venue displaced more than 170,000 pounds of carbon dioxide. This is the equivalent amount of carbon dioxide produced by 1.5 million miles of motor vehicle travel, which represents the average round trips to DTE Energy Music Theatre for 20,000 vehicles. In addition, DTE Energy Music Theatre’s recycling efforts hit a level of note when it recently reached 1.5 tons of recycled materials for the season. By collecting and recycling this amount of paper, plastic and glass, the venue has saved an equivalent of 36 trees, 10,000 gallons of water, 3.68 barrels of oil and 10,875 kilowatt hours of energy. The collection of recycled items is apparent to guests when they notice the many colorful bins accepting plastic throwaways along the walkways throughout the amphitheatre grounds. Less obvious, but just as important to the effort, the recycling program also takes place backstage, in the Starlite Club and in its concessions stands where plastic, paper, cardboard and glass throwaways are recycled. “We are pleased to see the results of our ‘going green’ initiative in its first summer, but we know we can do more and be more effective and we will continue to strive to do so,” said Tom Wilson, President and CEO of Palace Sports & Entertainment. “We hope that people see what we are doing at DTE Energy Music Theatre and our other venues and it will inspire them to follow through in their own lives.” The 15,00+ outdoor amphitheatre (7,000+ pavilion, 8,000+ lawn seats), whose seasons from May through September, had a particularly successful July, posting posted eight sold out shows in the month, including performances by Kid Rock and His Twisted Brown Trucker Band with Rev Run and Uncle Kracker, Ted Nugent, Jonas Brothers and The Police with Elvis Costello and the Imposters.
