After more than a year of planning, San Diego’s hospitality community is rolling out a warm San Diego welcome to the nearly 7,000 attendees of the 2008 American Society of Association Executives & The Center for Association Leadership’s Annual Meeting and Exposition August 16 -19 at the San Diego Convention Center. Eighty-five local sponsors – caterers, destination management companies, hotels, restaurants, and more – have been brought together by the ASAE 2008 Host Committee to plan several events highlighting the urban renaissance that has transformed San Diego since ASAE was last here in 1999. The Host Committee was formed by the San Diego Convention Center Corporation, the San Diego Convention & Visitors Bureau and San Diego’s hotel and hospitality community, and is co-chaired by Carol Wallace, President/CEO of the San Diego Convention Center Corporation, and David Peckinpaugh, President/CEO of the San Diego Convention and Visitors Bureau (both pictured in the center of the front row). Considered the “Super Bowl” of conventions, hosting this prestigious event in San Diego brings an immediate $31.2 million in economic impact, but more importantly, can help secure more than $1 billion in future meeting and convention business. According to ASAE & The Center, the host city can expect 20 percent of executives attending the annual meeting to book their own meeting in the host city over the next 5 years. In its 19-year history, the San Diego Convention Center has generated nearly $15.2 billion in economic impact, over $309.8 million in tax revenues and continues to serve as San Diego’s premier gathering place.
