McCORMICK EXPANSION AHEAD OF SCHEDULE Print E-mail

ImageChicago—New meeting space in the windy city will be available ahead of schedule. The Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority (MPEA) has announced that the new McCormick Place West Building will open eight months earlyin July of 2007 instead of the originally-targeted opening of March 2008. This is great news for the convention, trade show and meetings industry, says Leticia Peralta Davis, chief executive officer of the MPEA, which owns and operates McCormick Place. This early opening will allow McCormick Place to book meetings and events that could not otherwise have been accommodated. We are already aggressively marketing these newly available dates and have begun negotiating with several potential customers.

An artists rendering of the planned expansion of the Pennsylvania Convention Center, which doubles the size of the existing facility, including 541,000 sq. ft. of contiguous exhibit space and 87 meeting rooms.PHILADELPHIA, PA—The Pennsylvania Convention Center (PCC) expansion plans received a big push last week. Pennsylvania Governor Edward G. Rendell presented a $16 million check to PCC officials, kicking off the first monetary installment of the buildings expansion, which will nearly double its size. The multimillion-dollar check will cover routine expenses associated with initial phases of expansion, including architectural renderings, construction documents, property acquisition and the development of a finance plan, a business plan and an operating plan.

New OrleansThe Louisiana Superdome sustained extensive roof and other damage due to Hurricane Katrina. A $140 million repair project has been announced and the Superdome is due to re-open November 1, 2006. New OrleansThe Louisiana Superdome will re-open November 1, 2006 after repairs are completed from damage sustained as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Repair costs are estimated to be $140 million, most of which will be covered by the states insurance and by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The Superdome has become the most recognizable symbol of New Orleans, says Tim Coulon, chairman of the Louisiana Stadium and Exposition Board. The rebuilding of the Superdome will represent the rebuilding of the city.
